What Are Hadith and Why Are They Important?

Hadith are the sayings, actions, and approvals of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They are the second source of Islamic knowledge after the Quran. The Quran commands us to follow the Prophet ﷺ, and the Hadith show us how.

Allah says in the Quran:

"Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example." (Quran, 33:21)

"Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, refrain from it." (Quran, 59:7)

Learning Hadith is important because:

  • They explain and clarify the Quran

  • They show us how to practice Islam correctly

  • They teach us the character of the Prophet ﷺ

  • They guide us in every aspect of life

  • They preserve the Sunnah for generations
